Today was a beautiful Sunday - maybe even perhaps one of the last really warm Sundays of the year and there I was being a hard working real estate agent putting out her signs at 1.45pm getting ready for the streams of people who were going to come through my open house from 2pm to 5pm today.
The signs were out, I had all of my pens, sign in sheets, and information about the home ready. Lights were on , doors open, water bottles out, cute dress and high heels - I was ready to rock and roll.
A few people meander through the property, it was a steady trickle nothing to complain about. Now every, and I mean EVERY, realtor knows that feeling when it gets to 4.15pm and it is quiet - nobody has come through the door in the last 20 mins and it is soooo tempting to pack it all up a little early and sneak out.
You tell yourself, "If nobody comes through these doors by 4.30 I'm going to start packing up and leave 15 minutes early". Time is ticking away, if you came through my open house today you would also know that it was a vacant property and I did not bring a little chair with me so those cute Jessica Simpson peep toe pumps on my feet were starting to become veery uncomfortable.
All those text messages and phone calls from friends were making me anxious to get out the door and enjoy the last hours of sunshine - afternoon bbq's, football games, sailing on yachts, jet skiing!! - YOU PEOPLE KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! Rubbing it in my face whilst I volunteer my Sunday afternoon to the career I love so well.
So there I am at 4.46pm thinking, "screw this! I'm turning off the lights, locking up the doors, taking my signs and my sign in sheets and leaving early!! I've done my due diligence!!". It sounds like a brave thought, but in the end it was of course all just a thought and I decided to stay until the bitter end.
Well at 4.51pm who walks through the door? A buyer, with no agent who is looking in this price range and in this neighborhood. I chuckled to myself - is it some version of murphy's law (when you are about to jump ship someone turns up!) or is it just another lesson in expecting the unexpected, in having patience, perseverance, in always performing your job to the best of your ability.
Either way - I was glad I stayed, that I stuck it out. It turned out to be a fabulous open house and I still got to see the sun set on another glorious day in our city - the City of Angels.
